TOP 25 MOST ENDANGERED PRIMATES

IUCN Red List 2008: Threatened Primates by Habitat Country

This table summarizes the threat status for primates in each country in which they occur. The countries are ranked by the degree of threat to their individual primate faunas — those countries with the greatest percentage of threatened primates, relative to their total species count, are ranked highest.

Please note that because many primates are found in more than one country, the numbers for each threat category will add up to more than the global total.

The IUCN threat categories presented here include Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near Threatened (NT), Least Concern (LC), and Data Deficient (DD); each of these categories is defined at the bottom of the page.

NOTE: These data are still being analyzed, and individual values may vary slightly from their final form. The full 2008 Red List will be published in October of this year, and until that time these results should be considered preliminary.

Please also note that use of a particular country name does not constitute endorsement by the IUCN or the Primate Specialist Group; country names are presented solely for ease of geographic identification.

Red List Category Definitions

As defined by the IUCN, the threat categories are as follows:

Critically Endangered (CR) — the taxon (species or subspecies) faces an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.

Endangered (EN) — the taxon faces a very high risk of going extinct in the wild.

Vulnerable (VU) — the taxon faces a high risk of extinction in the wild.

Near Threatened (NT) — although not currently threatened, the taxon is very close to qualifying for threatened status.

Least Concern (LC) — the taxon does not qualify for threatened status; may be declining, but still widespread and abundant.

Data Deficient (DD) — there is not enough information to make a decision about the taxon's status. Please note this is not an assessment of its status per se, but rather of the inadequacy of the available data, and a species or subspecies listed as DD may still be in serious danger.

Not Evaluated (NE) — usually applied to recently described forms, this marks a taxon that has not yet been assessed.

For a much more detailed description of these threat categories, please refer to the IUCN Categories and Criteria, which served as the foundation for the primate assessments summarized here.
